What is a registered agent?
In short
A registered agent is the person or company officially designated to receive legal documents and state notices on behalf of a business. Every US state requires one. The agent must have a physical street address in the state of registration, not a PO box, and be available during business hours.
Why do you need a registered agent?
The agent is where a lawsuit is delivered. If service of process arrives and nobody receives it, the case can proceed and be decided without you, and the first you hear of it is a default judgment.
It is also the address the state uses for compliance notices, and it becomes public record. Using your home means your home address is searchable by anyone, and being your own agent means being at that address, in person, every working day.

The documents a Registered Agent receives tend to be the ones that matter most: state notices, tax assessments, and any legal documents served on the company. The whole point of a reliable agent is that none of it ever slips by.
Some founders try to use a friend's address or a P.O. box to trim the annual cost. States generally catch it, the agent gets rejected, and the company slips out of good standing. Sorting that out later takes far more time than the agent service ever would. Doing it right from the start keeps the path clear.

Can I be my own Registered Agent?
Yes, as long as you live in the state where the company is formed and meet the other rules: a physical address there and availability during business hours. If you are a non-resident founder, or based in a different state from your company, a third-party agent like us is the way to go. Many founders also prefer a separate agent so official mail reaches a second set of eyes.
What happens if my company doesn't have a Registered Agent?
The state can administratively dissolve the company. On top of that, any official notice or legal document for the company can go undelivered, which means you might not hear about it until much later. Keeping an agent in place keeps all of that from sneaking up on you.
Can I add Registered Agent when I form my company?
Yes. You can add it to your cart alongside formation, and it renews each year at our standard annual rate so you stay covered without lifting a finger.
Can I change my Registered Agent later?
Absolutely. The switch is made by filing a Statement of Change with the state, and we handle that for you. A lot of companies move to us after year one, since their original agent's renewal price tends to climb.
What does the Registered Agent actually do day to day?
We receive official mail from the state and federal government on your company's behalf, scan it, and forward it to you the same day. We also keep the physical presence in the state that the law requires. That's the whole job, done quietly in the background.
