The brief

What is an EIN?

In short

An EIN, or Employer Identification Number, is the nine-digit number the IRS issues to a business, written 12-3456789. It is the company's federal tax ID, the way a Social Security number identifies a person. You apply on IRS Form SS-4, and one company holds one EIN for life.

Why do you need an EIN?

No US bank will open a business account without one, and no payroll, payment processor or federal tax return works without one either. It is the number every institution asks for second, right after the formation documents.

Founders without a Social Security number can still get one. The IRS issues EINs to foreign responsible parties on the same Form SS-4, and we never ask you for an SSN or an ITIN to do it.

Who needs an EIN?

  • Every company opening a US business bank account
  • Anyone hiring an employee or running payroll
  • Foreign founders who have no SSN and no ITIN
  • Single-member LLCs that want to stop using a personal tax number

On your own, or with Summit

  • Applying. We prepare and submit the SS-4 either way.
  • Waiting. We read the code, fix the form and refile.
  • The paperwork. It lands in your portal and stays there.
Why it matters

What your EIN lets you do

This one number sits behind almost everything your company does in the US.

You need it to file tax returns, complete state forms, run payroll, and most importantly, to open business bank accounts in the company's name.

It also builds credibility. An EIN shows suppliers, customers, and partners that your company is properly registered and current with its tax obligations, which makes people comfortable doing business with you.

It opens doors to financing too. Many banks and lenders want to see an EIN before they will consider a loan or a line of credit, so having one keeps growth options on the table.

The process

How we request it

The EIN is issued by the IRS through their official application, where your company's basic information gets filled in. We prepare and submit that for you and follow it through to the EIN letter.

Timing usually lands somewhere between one and ten weeks depending on how the IRS is processing applications. We handle the whole thing, from the form to delivering your confirmation letter, and keep you posted along the way.

When I decided to start my business in the United States, I came to think that it would be impossible because I did not have a physical address in the country. But they solved that problem with the flexible space service. Today I finally have my company formed and running.

Questions

Asked on the way up.

Does my business need an EIN to open a bank account?

Yes. Banks require your company to already have its tax identification number before they will open a business account.

Which businesses should get an EIN?

Any incorporated company should get one. It is a core part of running the business properly, from banking to filing taxes.

Can an EIN application come back?

Sometimes. If the IRS spots an inconsistency or needs more information, the application comes back for a second submission. We prepare it carefully to keep that from happening, and if it does, we handle the follow-up.

How long does it take?

Anywhere from about one to ten weeks, depending on IRS processing times. We keep you updated until your EIN letter arrives.

What can I do once I have it?

Open a business bank account, file federal tax returns, run payroll, apply for loans and credit, set up vendor relationships, and onboard with platforms like Stripe and Amazon.

Can I get an EIN without a Social Security number?

Yes. The IRS issues EINs to foreign responsible parties on the same Form SS-4, filed by fax or phone rather than through the online tool, which only accepts applicants with an SSN or ITIN. We never ask you for either one.

Is an EIN the same thing as a tax ID?

For a business, yes. EIN, federal tax ID and employer identification number all mean the same nine-digit number the IRS issues, written 12-3456789. It is separate from any state tax or sales tax number, which are issued by states.

Does a single-member LLC need its own EIN?

To open a business bank account, run payroll, or stop handing out a personal tax number, yes. A single-member LLC with no employees can technically report under the owner's number, but almost every institution it deals with will ask for an EIN.

Can one company have two EINs?

No. One entity holds one EIN for life, and it is not reissued or transferred. A genuinely new entity needs its own, which is why forming a second company means a second application rather than reusing the first number.

Do I need a new EIN if the company changes its name?

No. The EIN stays with the entity through a name change, an address change and most ownership changes. What does have to happen is telling the IRS, so the name attached to that EIN matches the name on your filings.

What is the CP 575 letter?

The letter the IRS sends confirming your EIN, and the document banks ask for as proof of it. It is issued once, so it is worth keeping: replacing it means requesting a 147C letter instead, which takes longer than keeping the original did.
